Congenital Scoliosis (Toddler)

Case Information

This 2-year-old with congenital muscle disease had a severe congenital scoliosis arising from congenital bars. The congenital bars are in the lumbar spine at two different levels.
The traction x-ray shows correction of the curvature outside of the congenitally-fused vertebral segments.
The patient underwent a VEPTR (vertically expandable prosthetic titanium rib) placement.
The VEPTR is attached to the ribs on top and the pelvis on the bottom. It is like an internal splint which can be expanded every six months as the child grows.
The congenital scoliosis curve is markedly better and has gained length as well over the several years of distraction.
