This teenage boy had a severe congenital deformity. Congenital deformity arises from abnormal formation of the vertebra and other spinal elements.
The severe deformity is difficult to treat in the severe form. Halo traction can gradually decrease the deformity by unwinding the spinal column. He was placed in Halo Traction at the FOCOS hospital in Ghana for two months to improve the deformity.
The deformity improved significantly in traction shown in both radiographs and in the clinical pictures. The loosening of the deformity by traction makes the surgery easier and safer.
No anterior procedure was performed.
He underwent multiple Ponte osteotomies or releases of the spine via a posterior approach followed by correction with instrumentation.
The posterior fusion was performed using local bone and allograft.
