Case Details Date 07 Jan 2011 Doctor/Team Name Munish C. Gupta, M.D. Skills Halo traction, anterior release, Ponte osteotomy Category Pediatric, Spinal Deformity Case Information This 7-year-old had a resection of an Astrocytoma (spinal cord tumor) 3 times. The lamina is removed to resect the tumor. The spine falls into kyphosis after laminectomy due to resection of the posterior bone and soft tissue tension band. The kyphosis progresses with the growth of the spine. The patient had weakness in both legs and walked with crutches. Due to the high risk of neurologic injury with the severe kyphosis and weakness, this patient was treated with Halo traction. The traction greatly improved the kyphotic deformity as shown in the x-rays. The kyphosis was corrected by an anterior release and fusion followed by posterior multiple Ponte osteotomies and instrumentation.
