I was fortunate to have Dr. Munish Gupta as my first practice partner at the Southern California Complex Spine and Scoliosis in 1991. He had just completed his spine fellowship training at the Leatherman Spine Center in Louisville. From the outset, he demonstrated outstanding medical knowledge and technical skills akin to an attending spine surgeon who has been in practice for several years. I soon realized that I was learning new things form him and humbly allowed him to show me his new tricks. During the short 3 years we were together, he continued to impress me with his caring and compassionate personality.
Subsequent to our separation to other states, we communicated regularly, traveled together to different parts of the world to give lectures and operate on complex spine deformities together and shared our knowledge and experience to enrich each other.
He went on to achieve greater things in Spine surgery and became Professor of Orthopedics at UC Davis in Sacramento, California and Director of the Spine Center at the University.
He is well recognized nationally and internationally for his surgical skills, medical knowledge, integrity and ethical practice of medicine, and has also demonstrated great leadership in the management of fellowship and residency training programs. Munish is an active member of the Scoliosis Research Society and has served in many leadership capacities of the society including board membership. I see him one day assuming the presidency of this prestigious society.
